If I delete an email campaign, what happens to the people halfway through it?

Short answer

Deleting a campaign in systeme.io stops it immediately. Every contact still enrolled is permanently unsubscribed from that one campaign, and the campaign's emails and settings are erased with it.

What systeme.io says happens

Deleting a campaign interrupts it straight away. systeme.io's own note on the confirmation screen is direct about what that means for the people inside it: emails stop going out to anyone who was subscribed, and every one of them is permanently unsubscribed from that campaign.

The wording is specific. It says "from this campaign," not from your account. The wording is specific. It says "from this campaign," not from your account, though none of these articles spell out what that means for the contact's other campaigns or newsletter subscription.

Where the button lives

Emails, then Campaigns. Find the campaign, click the three dots, then Delete. A popup asks for confirmation, and that confirmation is the step that actually removes it.

The warning systeme.io attaches

The same screen calls out one case by name: a campaign that is currently sending. Understand the impact before confirming, it says, especially then. Delete a five-email welcome sequence while three new contacts are sitting between email two and email three, and email three never arrives for them. There is no draft left anywhere to send it from afterward.

What the article does not say

Three questions a business owner would actually ask, and none of them are answered on the page that documents deletion.

  • Do the stats survive? systeme.io's article on deleting a newsletter states plainly that the open rate, click rate and other performance numbers are kept after deletion. The campaign deletion article makes no matching promise. It only says the action "will erase all associated emails and settings," and stops there.
  • What happens to an automation rule that feeds it? Building a rule with a Subscribe to campaign action is a documented way to enrol people automatically. Nothing published says what happens to a rule like that once the campaign it names has been deleted: whether it fails quietly, still runs and does nothing, or was never allowed to be saved that way in the first place.
  • Can anyone be put back? Not into the campaign that was deleted. It no longer exists to subscribe them to. A contact could be added to a newly built replacement, starting again from its first email.

The lighter option, if that is really the goal

If the actual goal is only to stop one email that has not gone out yet, deleting the whole campaign is more than the job needs, and it cannot be undone. Deactivating the email is the closer parallel, though systeme.io's own writeup walks through deactivating and reactivating a campaign's emails as a group, not this single-email case, so treat the same resend risk as a reasonable expectation rather than a documented certainty.

The catch: reactivating a deactivated email later resends it to everyone currently enrolled, including contacts who already received it the first time. systeme.io's own advice, given for that exact situation, is to build a new campaign rather than switch old emails back on for people already inside one.
