Why isn't my coupon code working?

Short answer

systeme.io documents one cause outright: an expiration date typed in by hand. The date has to be picked from the calendar popup, and a typed one stops the coupon working. Everything else is setup worth re-checking: whether the coupon was attached to the order form, whether a Coupon element sits on the page, the currency on a fixed amount coupon, and the use limit.

The one systeme.io states outright

Its note in the coupon article is blunt. You have to select the expiration date from the calendar popup, and if you type the date in by hand the coupon will not work.

The article does not say what the customer sees when that happens. It says only that the coupon will not work.

Three steps, and the third is a separate job

Creating a coupon and having a customer able to use one are not the same task.

  • The coupon is made under Assets, then Coupons, then Create.
  • It is attached from the order form's own Coupons section, using the plus icon. Pick the discount type and the coupon code there, then Save.
  • Click Edit page to open the editor, then drag the Coupon element onto the page and save.

systeme.io gives that last one as a step rather than a warning, and the article does not say what happens if it is skipped.

A fixed amount coupon carries its own currency

Choosing the Fixed amount discount type makes a Coupon currency field appear, and you have to select the currency the discount is in. The article does not mention that field for percentage discounts.

It also does not say what happens if that currency is not the one the offer is priced in, so treat it as something to check rather than a known cause. It is worth checking after a funnel's currency has been changed.

Two fields worth reading twice

Limit of use is described as the maximum number of users who can use the coupon. Leave that box blank and it is unlimited.

Expiration puts a date on the code. The article describes the field without saying what a customer sees once that date has passed.

What has to exist before you can sell

A price plan. The same article's reminder is that an offer needs one added before it can be sold at all.

What the two discount types actually do

A fixed amount takes a set sum off the price plan, so $20 off $1,000 charges $980. A percentage takes a share, so 10% off $1,000 charges $900. On a subscription or a payment plan the discount applies on the payment due date each month.

To make something free, set the fixed amount equal to the price, or set the percentage discount to 100%.
