Why do my emails land in the promotions tab?
Gmail files most commercial mail there by design, and it is not the spam folder. Plainer writing, fewer images and fewer links shift the odds, but nothing guarantees the primary tab.
What the promotions tab is
Gmail has sorted incoming mail into tabs since 2013. Primary holds the messages it judges personal and important. Social holds notifications from social platforms. Promotions receives the majority of marketing emails, newsletters and commercial offers.
An email in Promotions has been delivered. It is in the inbox, in a different tab. That is a different outcome from landing in spam.
Why a good email still goes there
Google does not publish how the sorting works, and systeme.io says so plainly: the system is automated, based on many criteria, constantly changing and partly confidential.
The signals systeme.io names are the content and tone of the message, the identity of the sender and their domain, the recipient's own reading history, the reputation of the sender or their IP address, how other people treat the same emails, and signals close to the ones used for spam detection.
Its own wording is worth keeping in mind. Even a good marketing email can be classified as Promotions, and that is completely normal.
What actually shifts the odds
These are the changes systeme.io recommends.
- Send from an authenticated custom domain. Addresses at outlook.com, hotmail.com and similar public domains reduce your chances of good delivery even though they still work technically.
- Write the way a person writes. Words like Promotion, Limited offer and Buy now, aggressive phrasing and repeated calls to action all read as an advert rather than a message.
- Cut the images. A long email can carry one or two without a problem. systeme.io asks for a ratio of at least 60% text to 40% images, and a short email with several images still reads as marketing.
- Cut the links. For a standard marketing email systeme.io recommends 1 to 3 in total: a main call to action, a link to your site, and the unsubscribe link.
- Drop the decoration. Elaborate graphical signatures, designed headers and unusual fonts are rare in a personal message, and Gmail knows it.
- Keep the volume steady. Sudden bursts read as intensive marketing. Segmenting the list cuts the volume per send and makes each one more relevant.
Personalisation helps a little and settles nothing. Adding a first name is standard practice across the whole industry and Gmail recognises automated email anyway. systeme.io puts the first name in the body rather than the subject line, because a missing or badly formatted value in a subject line can trigger filters on its own.
What your readers can do
A reader can move one of your emails from Promotions to Primary by selecting it, right-clicking, choosing Move to tab and then Primary. Gmail may then offer to apply that choice to everything you send them afterwards.
Asking people to add the sending address to their contacts has a similar effect, by making it a trusted sender.
Testing is the only thing that settles it
Because the rules are not published, systeme.io's advice is to test rather than theorise: the subject line, the content, the formatting, the number of links, the type of call to action, one change at a time.
Newsletters have an A/B test built in for exactly this. Optimize sends both versions to a sample whose size you set, waits a period you set, then sends the better performing one to everybody else. Compare sends both to the whole audience, split evenly, with no automatic winner and no waiting period.
The part worth hearing
Promotions is not a punishment. systeme.io cites studies showing emails in that tab do not necessarily perform worse on open rate, because people go there deliberately when they are looking for offers.
How much it matters depends on what you sell. In e-commerce, travel and insurance, performance generally holds up, because readers expect offers to be there. In business-to-business email the stakes are higher, since the primary inbox brings immediate visibility.
There is one real cost. Usually only emails in the primary inbox trigger a mobile notification.
