Order bump or upsell: which should I add first?

Short answer

The order bump. It is a setting on a page you already have. An upsell needs a new funnel step, a new page, and two buttons you wire up yourself.

The two side by side

Why the bump goes first

It is a setting on a page that already exists. Nothing new gets designed, and the buyer passes through no extra step to see it.

An upsell is a page. It needs a template, copy, an offer and two working buttons before it does anything at all.

When the upsell earns its build

When the second offer is too big to explain in a tick box.

A bump has room for a line of text. If the next thing you want to sell needs a headline, a few bullet points and a reason for the price, it needs a page of its own.

What the two have in common

  • Both sell either a digital or a physical product.
  • Both hand over the same digital resources: a course, a course bundle, a tag, or a community.
  • Neither can sell a calendar event.
  • Both are charged as separate transactions from the main order, never rolled into one total.

They are not rivals

Nothing stops a funnel carrying both, and the order form is where both journeys start. Build the bump, watch it for a while, then add the upsell when the next offer is worth a page.
